How Creating YouTube Videos Improved My Student's Learning Experience

Yes, I now upload videos on YouTube, too! Check the channel, John Hernandez Edu.

Are you a teacher? Let's discuss what works for you, or let me know if you have taken this approach before and how did it go.

Teaching is something that, for me, constantly evolves. The methods we use to instruct our students to help them be future-ready must remain relevant for their present and next stages in life. The integration of technology in the classroom is something that most international schools take for granted, and national education is moving towards it. Therefore, as an educator, learner, and digital citizen, I have embarked on a journey to create a YouTube channel dedicated to Mathematics "that makes sense," Information and Communication Technology, and Computer Science practical skills. This is meant to bridge students to accessible and engaging education. This is not the only method nor the best for all students, and It's not an intent to untenable students to learn in technology-free environments; this fits my subjects and students in the areas where technology is needed or where technology enhances a different method.

Here's why I believe in the power of video learning and how it's shaping the future of my classroom.

Accessibility: Learning Without "Limits"

Four-wall learning is far from being the most adequate teaching/learning path. By hosting educational content on YouTube, I've unlocked a treasure trove of knowledge students can access anytime and anywhere. I remember downloading videos to watch on the metro and bus while I was on my way to College. Hence, I know that concise and edited videos are very convenient, and they empower students to take charge of their education, fitting study time into their unique schedules.

Student-Centered Approach: A Tailor for Students' Success Suit

I started creating videos long ago to answer students' questions while we were not in the classroom and to explain preliminary or advanced topics/skills. These videos were shared internally only. Even after opening the video to the public, I kept my current students in mind, focusing on their needs. This personalized touch means the content is highly relevant and directly aligned with their curriculum. Then, videos will be updated with their feedback,  areas of interest, and my reflections on the subjects.

Continuity of education: No students Left Behind

Students may join our school community mid-year or miss classes due to any circumstances. My YouTube videos serve as a lifeline, providing a comprehensive recap of crucial lessons that ensures every student has the opportunity to catch up. This continuity is vital for maintaining an inclusive educational environment where students stay caught up. A similar conclusion is reached when ESL students watch the videos with subtitles and at their speed.

A cohesive Educational Experience

The channel and my website serve as a centralized hub for instructional materials. This organization ensures that each student's cohort, year after year, can easily find and utilize the resources designed for their academic journey. It eliminates the confusion and frustration of navigating through multiple platforms or TEAMS channels, where the content can often be misplaced or slow to load.

Empowering High Achievers

These students often seek opportunities to push their boundaries and expand their knowledge. The availability of videos allows these students to dive deeper into subjects and advance at an accelerated pace. The flexibility to move beyond the classroom's pace fosters a culture of self-motivated learning and intellectual growth.

I can't guarantee that this approach will always be the best for my students, and Im not asking other teachers to do the same. I have many questions to reflect on and negative side considerations as well. However, I consider the positives outweigh the cons. And this is just another magic trick of the many performers, sorry, teachers have on their hands.

Let me know what your questions and considerations are.
